Flossing Basics: Why Your Dentist Keeps Asking

Brushing reaches only three of five tooth surfaces. Flossing cleans the rest — and it takes less than two minutes a day.

Prevention is the foundation of good dental care. This guide is written for patients and families who want simple, practical habits that keep teeth healthy for life.

Your toothbrush cleans the front, back and top of each tooth, but the tight spaces between teeth stay untouched. That is where most cavities between teeth start, and where flossing does its work.

Use about 40 cm of floss, winding most around one finger and the rest around the other. Slide it gently between teeth, curve it into a C-shape around each tooth and move it up and down beneath the gumline. A little bleeding at first is normal — if it continues beyond a week, see your dentist.

Remember: nothing replaces a professional check-up. See your dentist every six months, and book an appointment sooner if something feels wrong.
